Blood & Sputum Investigations

Blood investigations play a vital role in diagnosing and monitoring various respiratory and systemic conditions. Routine blood tests such as Complete Blood Count (CBC) help detect infections, inflammation, or anemia. Markers like C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) indicate the presence and severity of inflammation. In allergic conditions, elevated IgE levels can point toward hypersensitivity reactions. Specialized blood tests may also be performed to screen for autoimmune disorders or to assess tuberculosis exposure through tests like IGRA (Interferon-Gamma Release Assay). These blood markers guide clinicians in diagnosing underlying issues and tailoring appropriate treatment plans.

Sputum investigations involve the examination of mucus coughed up from the lungs and are crucial in identifying respiratory infections. Sputum culture and sensitivity help detect the specific bacteria causing infections and determine the most effective antibiotics. Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB) staining and GeneXpert/CBNAAT tests are commonly used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) and check for drug resistance. Sputum samples can also be examined for fungal infections or malignant cells in suspected cancer cases. These tests are essential in diagnosing conditions like pneumonia, bronchitis, tuberculosis, and lung abscesses, ensuring timely and accurate medical intervention.
