The shingles vaccine helps prevent herpes zoster, a painful skin rash caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (the same virus that causes chickenpox). It is recommended for adults aged 50 and older, even for those who’ve had shingles in the past. The newer recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) is preferred for its high effectiveness in preventing both shingles and its complication — postherpetic neuralgia, a chronic nerve pain.
