Sleep Disordered Breathing (OSA)

Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) refers to a group of conditions characterized by abnormal breathing patterns during sleep, the most common of which is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA occurs when the muscles in the throat relax excessively during sleep, causing the airway to become partially or completely blocked, leading to pauses in breathing (apneas) and reduced oxygen levels. These interruptions can happen multiple times per hour, disrupting sleep quality and leading to daytime fatigue, morning headaches, poor concentration, and increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Risk factors include obesity, snoring, large neck circumference, male gender, and certain anatomical abnormalities. Diagnosis is typically made using a sleep study (polysomnography), and treatment options include lifestyle changes, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, oral appliances, or in some cases, surgery. Timely recognition and management are crucial to restoring healthy sleep and preventing complications.

  • Common Triggers: Dust, pollen, mold, pet dander, smoke, and strong odors.
  • Shared Mechanism: Both involve inflammation caused by allergens triggering the immune system.
  • Symptoms Overlap: Nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, and difficulty breathing are common in both.
  • Treatment Options: Include inhalers, antihistamines, leukotriene receptor antagonists, and nasal sprays.
  • Preventive Measures: Allergen avoidance, air purifiers, regular cleaning, and immunotherapy in some cases.
