Sleep study

A sleep study, also known as polysomnography, is a comprehensive overnight test used to evaluate sleep disorders by monitoring various body functions during sleep. It records brain activity (EEG), eye movements, heart rate, oxygen levels, breathing patterns, snoring, and body movements. This test is especially useful in diagnosing conditions like Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), insomnia, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, and parasomnias (abnormal behaviors during sleep).

Sleep studies can be conducted in a sleep lab or sometimes at home using simplified equipment (home sleep apnea test). The data collected helps sleep specialists determine the quality and stages of sleep, detect breathing irregularities, and guide appropriate treatment plans such as CPAP therapy, medication, or lifestyle modifications. Accurate diagnosis through a sleep study is crucial for improving sleep quality and preventing long-term complications like hypertension, heart disease, and daytime fatigue.
