The pneumococcal vaccine protects against infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, including pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. It is especially recommended for adults aged 65 and above, and for younger individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, heart disease, or weakened immune systems. There are two types — PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine) and PPSV (Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine) — and the appropriate schedule is determined based on age and health status.
