The HPV vaccine protects against the human papillomavirus, a common sexually transmitted infection that can lead to cervical, anal, throat, and other genital cancers, as well as genital warts. It is recommended for adolescents (both boys and girls) starting at ages 9–12, and catch-up vaccination is advised up to age 26 if not previously vaccinated. In certain cases, adults up to age 45 may also benefit after consulting with a healthcare provider.
